Al-Sarqasṭī also transmitted the report in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (2/70) as a Companion-statement, with the wording: “None of you should drop down the way a runaway camel collapses.”
As for the ḥadith of Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr, it was produced by Abū Dāwūd (726), al-Tirmidhī (268), al-Nasāʾī (1089), and Ibn Mājah (882) through the chain of Sharik al-Nakhaʿī, from ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr. Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “This ḥadith is ḥasan gharīb; we do not know anyone who has reported it in this form except Sharik.” Al-Dāraqutnī added, “Sharik is alone in relating it, and he is not strong in what he narrates on his own.” Al-Bayhaqī judged the chain weak, though he noted other routes for it, and on that basis al-Khaṭṭābī concluded, “The report of Wāʾil is sounder than that of Abū Hurayrah.”
Regarding the narration of Ibn ʿUmar: al-Bukhārī cited it in suspended form (2/290 Fatḥ), while Ibn Khuzaymah (1/318), Abū Dāwūd, al-Ṭaḥāwī, and al-Dāraqutnī linked the chain in full, all by way of al-Darāwardī from ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar. Imām Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī both expressed reservations about al-Darāwardī’s transmission from ʿUbaydullāh. By contrast, Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī reported from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, tracing it back to the Prophet ﷺ: “The two hands prostrate just as the face prostrates; so when one of you places his face on the ground, let him place his hands, and when he lifts it, let him lift them.”
Al-Awzāʿī said, “I met the people putting their hands down before their knees.”
It is authentically reported from ʿUmar — may Allah be pleased with him — in suspended form that “he would go down upon his knees.” Ibn Abī Shaybah recorded this.
Glosses:
• ‘He should not collapse (yabruk)’: one says ‘the camel baraka, yabroku (to kneel)’ when it drops onto its fore-legs; al-barak is the part of the camel’s chest that meets the ground.
