239 – Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When you prostrate, place your palms flat and lift your elbows.” Recorded by Muslim (1).
240 – Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr (may Allah be pleased with him) related: “Whenever the Prophet ﷺ bowed in rukūʿ he would spread his fingers, and when he prostrated he would draw them together.” Recorded by al-Ḥākim (2).
* Degree of authenticity:
The report of Wail b. Hujr is judged hasan (reliable).
In Al-Talkhis it is noted that the hadith has a supporting chain from Abu Humayd, recorded by Abu Dawud (no. 731): “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while in rukū‘ (bowing), used to spread his fingers.” A further corroboration is transmitted by Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Al-Nasai through the narration of Abu Mas‘ud al-Ansari.
Al-Hakim declared the hadith sahih (authentic), a verdict endorsed by Al-Dhahabi; Ibn Khuzaymah (1/301) and Ibn Hibban (5/247) likewise rated it sahih.
* Glossary of the two hadiths:

– farraja bayna asabi‘ihi: he spread the fingers of both hands when grasping his knees.
– damma asabi‘ahu: he brought his fingers together when placing his hands on the ground during sujud (prostration).
* Legal points inferred from the two hadiths:
1 – The hadith of Al-Bara’ shows that the worshipper is obliged to place his palms on … [text breaks here].
