Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

236 – Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head from bowing he would say:
‘O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs all praise—praise that fills the heavens, fills the earth, and fills whatever else You will beyond that; You are worthy of praise and majesty. The truest words a servant can say—and all of us are Your servants—are: O Allah, none can withhold what You give, none can give what You withhold, and no possessor of wealth and power is of any avail against You.’”

Vocabulary of the ḥadīth:
– rabbana laka al-hamd (Our Lord, to You belongs all praise): al-Kirmani said that the phrase may occur without the conjunction “and,” while some narrations include it. Both forms are permissible, with no preference for either in the soundest opinion.
– milʾ al-samawāt wa-al-arḍ (filling the heavens and the earth): the word milʾ is in the accusative as a cognate accusative, or in the nominative as the predicate of an omitted subject. Al-Khattabi explained that this is figurative language: speech is not quantifiable by measures nor contained by vessels; the point is to denote great abundance—were the praise corporeal, it would fill all of that.
– baʿd (“beyond”/“after”): an adverb severed from its genitive construction, with the genitive still intended; thus it is indeclinable with a ḍammah.
– min shayʾ (“of anything”): an explanatory phrase clarifying “whatever You will.”
– ahl al-thanāʾ (worthy of praise): accusative as a specification, or a vocative from which the particle of address has been omitted; it may also appear in the nominative as the predicate of an omitted subject, the implied meaning being: “You are worthy of praise.”
