Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

Points derived from the ḥadith:

1 – It is recommended to pronounce the basmalah—Bi-smi llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm (“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful”)—aloud at the very beginning of the Qur’an recitation in prayer.

2 – Al-Mardāwī states in Sharḥ al-Mughnī: “It is the soundest report on the subject,” and al-Nasā’ī devoted a chapter in his Sunan entitled “Reciting Bi-smi llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm aloud.” Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah was asked about this ḥadith and replied: “The scholars of ḥadith unanimously agree that no explicit, authentic narration establishes reciting it aloud; what is explicit is found only in fabricated reports.” Hence this ḥadith cannot be used as proof for that ruling and cannot stand against the authentic narrations already cited or those not yet mentioned.

2 – It is recommended for the imam to say “Āmīn,” lengthening his voice. This is supported by what al-Ḥākim (1/357) and al-Bayhaqī (2/46) related—and both authenticated—from Abū Hurayrah: whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached “nor those who go astray” (Q 1:7) he would say “Āmīn,” prolonging it until the people in the first row could hear, and the mosque would resound.

4 – Saying “Āmīn” is characteristic of supplication; it seals the prayer and means “O Allah, answer.” It should be pronounced after a slight pause following the recitation so that it is known not to be part of the Qur’an.

5 – The ḥadith establishes the legitimacy of saying “Allāhu akbar” while moving from one posture of the prayer to another. This will be examined in detail, Allah willing.
