- When he ﷺ bowed he did not raise his head above the level of his back.
- Nor did he lower it beneath that level; he kept it midway, so that, as Ibn Mājah relates from Wābiṣah b. Maʿbad, “I saw the Prophet ﷺ praying, and whenever he bowed he kept his back so straight that if water were poured upon it, it would remain in place.”
- Whenever he rose from bowing he would not go down for prostration until he was standing upright, and he used to say, “No prayer is valid in which a man does not straighten his spine while bowing and prostrating.” [Reported by the Five; al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ]. This remained the practice of the scholars from among the Companions after him.
- Likewise, when he rose from prostration he would not prostrate again until he was sitting upright, and he commanded the same, as mentioned earlier in his words: “No prayer is valid in which a man does not straighten his spine while bowing and prostrating.”
- After every two rakʿahs he would sit and during that sitting recite “al-taḥiyyātu lillāh,” that is, the tashahhud that has been transmitted. Its finest form is the one recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ turned to us and said, ‘When any one of you prays, let him say: All glorifications are for Allah, and all acts of worship and all that is good. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s righteous servants. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.’” Its commentary will come, Allah willing, under ḥadīth ⦗250⦘.
- In his sitting between the two prostrations, and in the first sitting of a prayer that contains two tashahhuds, he ﷺ would spread his left foot and sit upon it, erecting the right foot and pointing its toes toward the qiblah.
- He ﷺ forbade “the devil’s perch,” which is to raise one’s shins and thighs while placing the buttocks between them on the ground. This is the dog-like squat that Satan encourages so as to rob the prayer of its dignity and graceful form.
