Chapter on the Manner of the Prayer
Introduction

The manner—or outward form—of the prayer is the configuration that comes into being during the act of prayer through its pillars, obligatory components, and recommended practices. A person’s legal responsibility is discharged and the prescribed duty falls from him once he performs it while meeting its conditions, pillars, and obligatory elements alone.

This prayer is the greatest means of worship for attaining Allah’s pleasure and His reward, provided that the performance of the obligations is coupled with humility, submissiveness, composure, and a heart wholly focused on Allah. Thus one performs it while conscious of Allah’s watchful gaze, reflecting and pondering over the Qur’anic recitation, the words of remembrance and supplication he utters, and the bodily postures of standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting that he executes.

Al-Ghazālī said: “O Muslim, you will never reach obedience to Allah’s commands unless you keep watch over your heart and limbs at every moment and every breath, from the time you rise in the morning until you retire at night. Realize that Allah is aware of your inner thoughts, supervising both your outward and inward states, encompassing every step you take, every fleeting notion, all of your stillness and movements. Therefore conduct yourself with decorum in the presence of the King, the All-Compelling; strive that He never find you where He has forbidden you, nor miss you where He has commanded you.

And know that Allah observes your innermost self and looks upon your heart; He accepts from your prayer only in proportion to your humility and submissiveness. So worship Him in your prayer as though you see Him; even if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you. If your heart is absent and your limbs lack tranquility, this is due only to your deficient awareness of Allah’s majesty. Treat your heart, that it might attend your prayer, for you will have from your prayer only what you comprehend of it.” End of his words, may Allah have mercy on him.
