177 - Mutarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Shikhkhir relates from his father who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing the prayer, and from his chest there came a sound like the bubbling of a cauldron, brought on by his weeping.” The hadith is reported by the Five—except Ibn Mājah—and was declared authentic by Ibn Ḥibbān (1).
Hadith Status
The report is ṣaḥīḥ (sound). It was authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān, Ibn Khuzaymah, and al-Ḥākim, and Imām Aḥmad transmitted it with a sound chain. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar remarked in Fatḥ al-Bārī: “Its chain is strong.”
Glossary
• azīz: the humming or rattling sound produced by a boiling pot.
• mirjal: a large cooking cauldron.
• min al-bukāʾ: When the word bukāʾ (weeping) is pronounced with an extended ending, it refers to the audible sobbing; when shortened, it denotes the mere shedding of tears. Here the first sense is intended, as noted by al-ʿAynī in his commentary on al-Bukhārī.
Points of Benefit
- The hadith recommends exhibiting khushūʿ—humble reverence—during the prayer and casting oneself in complete submission before Allah Most High.
