Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

with which one wraps himself, covering his body; its plural is luḥuf.
— ʿĀtiq: the portion between the shoulder and the neck, the normal place for the cloak to rest. The term may be treated as masculine or feminine; its plural is ʿawātiq.
— “So let him overlap its two edges”: meaning, let him cross the two ends of the cloth by throwing the right edge over his left shoulder and the left edge over his right shoulder, thereby covering his chest while the middle of the cloth lies across his back to cover the upper torso. This is done when the garment is wide; when it is too narrow, he should use it as an izār (waist-wrapper) to cover the prayer awrah.

Points derived from the hadith

  1. The thawb intended here is the izār, which covers the lower part of the body, together with the ridāʾ, which covers the upper part. It is not the qamīṣ (shirt), for a tailored shirt already combines the functions of both cloths by covering the upper and lower body alike.
  2. If the garment is wide, the worshipper should wrap himself in it so that it covers from the shoulders down to below the knees. Since he has a complete covering for what must be concealed, it is recommended that he do this during prayer.
  3. If the garment is narrow and cannot cover the entire body, he must at least cover the obligatory awrah—that is, for a man, the area from the navel to the knees—using it as an izār, even if his shoulders and upper body remain uncovered.
  4. It is recommended to cover at least one of the two shoulders in prayer when one has enough cloth to cover both the awrah and the shoulders. If the cloth suffices only for the awrah, covering it takes precedence, for it is the more important obligation.
  5. The hadith indicates that a Muslim is to fear Allah to the best of his ability: whatever duties he is capable of performing he must fulfil, and whatever lies beyond his capacity is excused— and Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
