Vocabulary
• ḥāʾiḍ: One says, “ḥāḍat al-marʾah ḥayḍan (the woman menstruated), so she is a ḥāʾiḍ,” a term specific to women. It may also appear as ḥāʾiḍah; the plurals are ḥāʾiḍāt and ḥuyyaḍ. In the hadith, “al-ḥāʾiḍ” does not denote a woman actually menstruating while performing the prayer; rather, it refers to a female who has reached puberty.
• khimār (pl. khumur): The verb khammara means “to cover,” and takhmīr is “covering.” A woman’s khimār is the cloth with which she covers her head and neck.
