162 – ʿAlī ibn Ṭalq (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If any one of you passes wind during the prayer, let him leave, perform ablution, and repeat the prayer.” Narrated by the Five, and declared sound by Ibn Ḥibbān⦗1⦘.
Grade of the ḥadith:
The report is ḥasan (good). Al-Tirmidhī said, “The ḥadith is ḥasan.” It is supported by the narration recorded by Muslim (362) from Abū Hurayrah: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “When one of you feels something in his stomach and is unsure whether anything has come out, let him not leave the mosque until he hears a sound or detects a smell.” Imām al-Tirmidhī graded the ḥadith ḥasan, and both Ibn Ḥibbān and Ibn al-Sakan judged it ṣaḥīḥ (sound).
Vocabulary of the ḥadith:
– ʿAlī ibn Ṭalq: the first syllable is opened, the second is silent; he was a Companion from Banū Ḥanīfah.
– fasāʾ: the term fusāʾ (with ḍammah on the fāʾ) refers to wind exiting the anus without sound.
– “let him repeat the prayer”: the lām is the imperative particle; iʿādah (repetition) here means beginning the prayer anew.
Points derived from the ḥadith:
- Passing wind from the anus nullifies ablution and thereby invalidates the prayer; the scholars are unanimously agreed on this.
- Whoever experiences this must break off his prayer, perform ablution, and repeat the prayer, for his original prayer has become invalid.
