Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

157 – He also transmits, on the authority of Ziyād b. al-Ḥārith (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared, “Whoever gives the adhān is the one who gives the iqāmah.” This narration, too, was classed as weak (1).

Hadith grading:
The report is ḥasan (sound) when its supporting chains are considered together. Al-Tirmidhī related it and commented: “We know it only through the narration of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ifrīqī, who is deemed weak by the majority; nevertheless, most scholars act upon it.” Aḥmad said, “I do not record the ḥadīth of al-Ifrīqī.”
Ibn Ḥajar notes in al-Talkhīṣ that Ibn al-Qaṭṭān and others likewise graded the ḥadīth weak.
A second route for the ḥadīth was produced by al-Ṭabarānī and al-ʿUqaylī, through Saʿīd b. Rāshid, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿUmar; it contains a story, yet Saʿīd is weak, and both Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī and Ibn Ḥibbān declared this particular report unsound.
Even so, al-Ḥāzimī judged the ḥadīth ḥasan, while al-ʿUqaylī and Ibn al-Jawzī considered it strong, and Aḥmad Shākir graded it ṣaḥīḥ (authentic).

Points derived from the ḥadīth:

  1. The Five compilers narrate—from Ziyād b. al-Ḥārith al-Ṣudāʾī—his saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O brother of Ṣudāʾ, call the adhān.” He added, “So I gave the adhān. When Bilāl wanted to make the iqāmah, the Prophet said, ‘The brother of Ṣudāʾ will give it, for whoever calls the adhān is the one who gives the iqāmah.’”
  2. The ḥadīth establishes that the right to pronounce the iqāmah belongs to the person who has given the adhān. Al-Tirmidhī remarked: “Most scholars apply this principle—that whoever calls the adhān should also give the iqāmah.”
