148 – Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I performed the two ʿĪd prayers with the Prophet ﷺ on more than one or two occasions, and on none of them was there any adhān or iqāmah.” Narrated by Muslim (1). A similar wording is found in the report agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) and others (2).
Glossary of terms
– Samurah: the sīn is pronounced with a fatḥah and the mīm with a ḍammah. He is the son of Jundub. Jābir is a noble Companion and an ally of the Anṣār.
– “More than once or twice”: the mention of “once” and “twice” is not literal; it simply indicates that the incident occurred many times.
Lessons derived from the ḥadith
- For the ʿĪd prayer—whether ʿĪd al-Fiṭr or ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā—no adhān or iqāmah is prescribed. This is virtually a consensus among the scholars.
- Ibn al-Qayyim said in Zād al-Hadī: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached the open prayer ground for the ʿĪd prayer, he would commence the prayer without adhān, without iqāmah, and without saying, ‘al-ṣalātu jāmiʿah’; the sunnah is to leave all of that aside.”
- The wisdom—Allah knows best—behind omitting the adhān for the two ʿĪds is that the entry of their time is already well publicized, and its timing is fixed and known. The sole purpose of the adhān is to announce the arrival of the prayer time, whereas here the people are not in need

* مفردات الحديث:
