Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

that nothing in its wording is to be repeated except the phrase “qad qāmati ṣ-ṣalāh” (“The prayer has begun”), for that is the very point of the iqāma.

What may be drawn from the ḥadith

  1. The Prophet ﷺ consulted his Companions about a means by which they could recognize that the time for an obligatory prayer had entered, but they dispersed before arriving at a solution.
  2. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd saw in his sleep a man carrying a bell. He asked, “Will you sell the bell?” The figure replied, “What will you do with it?” He said, “We will summon people to prayer with it.” The man said, “Shall I not direct you to something better?” He answered, “Indeed.” The man said, “You say: Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar …” to the end of the adhān. When he told the Prophet ﷺ of this, the Prophet said, “It is a true vision,” and ordered that it be acted upon.
  3. The ḥadith establishes the legitimacy of the adhān as a call for those who are not yet present to come to the mosque for prayer.
  4. It also shows that the phrases of the adhān should be paired—some even fourfold, such as the opening takbīr—so that the adhān comprises fifteen phrases, all recited twice except the final one. This is the preferred adhān transmitted from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd.
  5. The iqāma, by contrast, is to be recited singly, except for the opening takbīr and the phrase “qad qāmati ṣ-ṣalāh,” which are recited twice. Although the literal wording of the ḥadith suggests uttering the opening takbīr only once, the majority of scholars hold that it should be said twice.
  6. It is preferable to omit the tarjīʿ—that is, pronouncing the two testimonies quietly and then repeating them aloud.
  7. It is recommended that, in the dawn prayer, the muʾadhdhin say after “ḥayya ʿala l-falāḥ”: “al-ṣalātu khayrun mina l-nawm” (“Prayer is better than sleep”) twice.
  8. This phrase is particularly apt at that time because people are usually asleep and need the reminder.
  9. The wisdom behind repeating the adhān while leaving the iqāma single is that the adhān is intended to inform those who are absent;
