136 – Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O descendants of ʿAbd Manāf, do not stop anyone who wishes to circumambulate this House and pray in it, at whatever hour he pleases—by night or by day.” The Five compilers recorded it, and both al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Ḥibbān graded it authentic. Status of the ḥadith:
The report is ṣaḥīḥ. It was transmitted by Aḥmad, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasāʾī, al-Dārimī (2/96), Ibn Mājah, al-Dāraquṭnī (1/424), al-Ḥākim, and al-Bayhaqī (5/92). Al-Tirmidhī said, “Good and sound,” while al-Ḥākim judged it “sound according to Muslim’s criteria,” a ruling endorsed by al-Dhahabī.
Glossary:
• ʿAbd Manāf: the son of Quṣayy and the Prophet’s fourth forefather. His offspring formed the most esteemed clan of Quraysh; al-Zarkalī notes that leadership of Quraysh passed to him after his father.
• “At whatever hour”: The particle ay is a relative pronoun; the feminine ending appears for gender agreement, as such concord is permissible with the relative pronoun ayya.
Points derived from the ḥadith:
- ʿAbd Manāf is the Prophet’s fourth ancestor. His progeny were charged with providing water and hospitality to the pilgrims, enjoying the highest honor in Quraysh. The narrator, Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, was a leader of the Banū ʿAbd Manāf, whose fourth forefather is likewise ʿAbd Manāf.
- It is forbidden to bar worshippers in the Sacred Mosque at any hour of the night.
