125 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “When we reached Sarif I began to menstruate, so the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, ‘Do whatever a pilgrim does, except that you must not circumambulate the House until you become pure.’” Agreed upon, recorded within a longer narration. Glossary of the ḥadith
– Sarif: A proper noun that declines as diptote because it is both a place-name and feminine. It is a valley situated about ten kilometres outside the boundary of the Sacred Precinct on the Tanʿīm side and eighteen kilometres from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, along the Mecca–Madinah road. It lies between Mecca and the valley of al-Jumūm (Mar al-Ẓahrān) and is now known as al-Nawwāriyyah.
– ḥiḍtu (“I menstruated”): The ḥāʾ carries a kasrah because, when a hollow triliteral verb whose middle radical is a yāʾ is conjugated in the past tense with a subject pronoun, the first consonant is given a kasrah. Its original form was ḥayaḍtu; the yāʾ changed to an alif owing to the open vowel that preceded it, then the alif was omitted to avoid two consecutive silent letters, yielding ḥaḍtu. The fatḥah on the ḥāʾ was finally shifted to a kasrah to indicate the elided yāʾ.
– ghayra allā taṭūfī (“except that you must not circumambulate”): ghayra is in the accusative; allā is the emphatic form of an lā (“that you not”).
– ghayr (“other than, except”): Like siwāʾ (“other than”), but with certain grammatical distinctions. It is invariably annexed (muḍāf ); that connection may be notional rather than explicit, and it never becomes definite through annexation because of its inherent indefiniteness.
Points derived from the ḥadith
1 – ʿĀʾishah had entered iḥrām for ʿumrah with the intention of performing tamattuʿ—that is, an ʿumrah followed by ḥajj—during the Farewell Pilgrimage.
