Glossary of Ḥadīth Terms
• “The Jews”: The descendants of Jacob; they are also called the Hebrews or Israelites, after the tribes of Israel. Their religion is Judaism, their prophet is Moses, and their scripture is the Torah—a book Allah revealed to His prophet Moses, which his community later altered.
• “Would not eat with her”: Eating is the act of conveying what is chewed—or unchewed—to the stomach. Muʾākalah (sharing a meal) means eating together. Thus, “they would not eat with her” signifies that they would avoid dining in her presence and would distance themselves from her.
• “Do” (iṣnaʿū): From ṣanaʿa, yaṣnaʿu, ṣanʿan—to perform an action. Here it means that a man may physically enjoy his wife in every way short of direct contact with the genitalia.
• “Nikāḥ”: In this context, it specifically denotes sexual intercourse.
