117 – ʿĀ’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related that Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaysh used to experience istiḥāḍah (non-menstrual bleeding). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: “Menstrual blood is black and readily recognizable; when you see that, refrain from the prayer. When it is the other kind, perform wuḍū’ and pray.” This was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī; Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim declared it authentic, whereas Abū Ḥātim regarded it as anomalous. (1)
In the report of Asmā’ bint ʿUmays recorded by Abū Dāwūd: “Let her sit in a basin; when she notices a yellowish tinge floating on the surface of the water, let her take a single ghusl for Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr together, a single ghusl for Maghrib and ʿIshā’ together, and a single ghusl for Fajr, and between those times let her renew her wuḍū’.” (2)
– Ḥadith grading –
The ḥadith is ṣaḥīḥ.
It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī and authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim.
Al-Dāraquṭnī stated, “All of its narrators are trustworthy,” and al-Ḥākim said, “It meets the criteria of Muslim.”
Ibn Ḥajar noted in al-Talkhīṣ that Muslim included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (333) without the words “and perform wuḍū’,” and al-Bayhaqī said that this addition is not reliably preserved. It seems that Muslim regarded this wording as weak because it conflicts with the other versions.
