116 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them) said: “Part of the Sunnah is that a man should not pray more than one prayer with a single act of tayammum; he must perform a new tayammum for the next prayer.” Al-Dāraqutnī recorded it with a very weak chain (1).
– Ḥadith grading:
The ḥadith is weak.
The author states: Al-Dāraqutnī transmitted it with a very weak chain because it passes through al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmārah, who is extremely weak. In this chapter there is also a mawqūf report from ʿAlī recorded by al-Dāraqutnī that contains Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭaʾah and al-Ḥārith al-Aʿwar; a report from Ibn ʿUmar narrated by al-Bayhaqī, who said it is the soundest tradition in the chapter; and a report from ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ transmitted by al-Dāraqutnī, in which there is a severe interruption between Qatādah and ʿAmr.
– Vocabulary notes:
• “From the sunnah” means the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ; therefore, the report is treated as marfūʿ (traced back to him).
• “Except one prayer”: the excluded term here is in the accusative because the verb acts upon it; it is excluded from an incomplete negative clause.
– Points derived from the ḥadith:
1 – If a Companion says, “From the Sunnah is such-and-such,” the report is considered marfūʿ, for by “sunnah” they intend only the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
2 – A person who has performed tayammum may pray only one prayer with that tayammum; this is the understanding drawn from the ḥadith, and the issue will be examined in detail shortly, Allah willing.
