112 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
“Two men set out on a journey. When the time for prayer came and they had no water, they performed tayammum with clean earth and prayed. Later, while the prayer time still remained, they found water. One of them repeated his ablution (wuḍūʾ) and the prayer, whereas the other did not. They then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said to the one who had not repeated: ‘You have followed the sunnah, and your prayer is sufficient for you.’ And he said to the other: ‘You shall have a double reward.’”

Grading of the hadith
Scholars differ as to whether its chain is connected or interrupted; the correct view is that it is mursal (missing the Companion).
Al-Talkhīṣ states: Abū Dāwūd, al-Dārimī (1/207), al-Ḥākim (1/286), and al-Dāraqutnī (1/188) recorded it with a continuous chain, whereas al-Nasāʾī (433), Ibn al-Mubārak, and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsat (8/48) recorded it as mursal.
Mūsā ibn Hārūn said: “To raise it to the Prophet ﷺ is a mistake, for Ibn Nāfiʿ preserves it from ʿAṭāʾ as a mursal report.”
The hadith also has an elevated (marfūʿ) supporting narration from Ibn ʿAbbās, but it contains Ibn Lahīʿah, who is weak because of his poor memory.
