Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

5 – “Subhan Allah al-‘Azim” (Glory be to Allah, the Tremendous). He alone merits every description of grandeur—majesty, might, and absolute dominion. Such are His attributes, Glorified and Exalted is He.

6 – His words: “Subhan Allah wa-bi-hamdih, Subhan Allah al-‘Azim.” The two formulas are coupled so that the stations of hope and fear are joined. The mention of hamd (praise) is the beautiful commendation of the deeds that emanate from Him and of the qualities of perfection and beauty that He possesses, while fear, dread, and reverent awe relate to His greatness, majesty, and sovereignty.

7 – Ibn Hajar states in Fath al-Bari: The virtues reported for remembrance are granted only to those distinguished in religion, complete in character, and pure from what is unlawful and from grave sins. Do not think that someone who makes abundant dhikr yet persists in whatever passions he wishes, violating Allah’s religion and its sanctities, will be numbered among the purified and sanctified or will attain their ranks merely by words that pass across his tongue without God-fearingness or righteous deeds.

8 – Ibn Rajab comments: The mere utterance of the phrase “Allahumma ighfir li” (O Allah, forgive me) carries the same ruling as any other supplication; if Allah wills, He answers it and forgives the supplicant—especially when it comes from a heart broken by sin or coincides with an hour of acceptance, such as the pre-dawn time or the moments following the prescribed prayers. However great the servant’s sins may be, Allah’s pardon and forgiveness are greater; next to His clemency they are insignificant.

Ibn Mas‘ud said, “On the Day of Resurrection Allah will grant a forgiveness such as has never crossed the mind of any human.” This was recorded by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in Husn al-Zann bi-Allah.

All praise is for Allah; by His grace and favour good works reach completion. On the sixth day of Jumada al-Thani in the year 1410 AH, this blessed commentary was concluded with the extraction of its rulings, written by the one who hopes for his Lord’s pardon, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih ibn Hamd ibn Muhammad ibn Hamd al-Bassam, in his home in the ‘Aziziyyah district of Mecca. I ask Allah, Exalted is He, to make it beneficial to its author,
