1368 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, “O Allah, benefit me through what You have taught me; teach me what will benefit me; and grant me knowledge that benefits me.” Related by al-Nasāʾī and al-Ḥākim. (1)
1369 – Al-Tirmidhī records a report from Abu Hurayrah with similar wording, adding at the end: “and increase me in knowledge. Praise be to Allah in every circumstance, and I seek refuge with Allah from the condition of the people of the Fire.” Its chain of transmission is sound (ḥasan). (2)

Degree of authenticity:
Its isnād is ḥasan, as affirmed by the author and by al-Suyūṭī. The hadith was transmitted by al-Nasāʾī and al-Tirmidhī; al-Ḥākim declared it “sound according to the criteria of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabī agreed. Ibn Kathīr, in his Tafsīr, said: “It was reported by Ibn Mājah and al-Bazzār; al-Tirmidhī also narrated it through Abū Kuraib from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr, and said, ‘It is singular (gharīb) through this route.’”
Expanded vocabulary for the previous four hadiths:
• al-khaṭīʾah: a sin, whether major or minor.
• al-jahl: the opposite of knowledge; Ibn ʿAbbās said, “Whoever does evil is ignorant, and it is out of his ignorance that he commits the evil.”
