1365 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The supplication the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) most frequently recited was:
“Our Lord, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and shield us from the punishment of the Fire.” Agreed upon. (1)

Lessons drawn from the ḥadīth:
1 – This invocation is a noble Qurʾanic verse that the Prophet (peace be upon him) often used in his supplications; thus it is at once a Qurʾanic verse and an authenticated prophetic report. Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ said: “He (peace be upon him) would call upon Allah with this verse because it gathers every meaning a servant could ask for concerning this world and the next. Here, ‘goodness’ means blessing, so he asked for the bliss of both worlds together with protection from the Fire, which is the perfection of happiness in the two lives: the first and the second.”
2 – This supplication is among the most comprehensive, encompassing, perfect, beneficial, exalted, and beautiful of all prayers. It combines the twofold good of this world and the Hereafter as well as protection from evil and its causes. The request for “goodness in this world” covers every desirable aim: the attainment of beneficial knowledge, righteous deeds, health and well-being from illnesses and afflictions, safety from troubles, crises, and calamities; success in a devout wife who delights him when he looks at her, pleases him when he is present, and safeguards herself, their children, and his wealth when he is absent; the blessing of dutiful, upright offspring who gladden the eye, satisfy the soul, and cheer the heart; security in one’s homeland, stability in houses and dwellings; and the attainment of satisfaction and contentment with whatever Allah the Exalted has apportioned.
