Vocabulary of the ḥadith
• zawāl niʿmatik (the withdrawal of Your favor): zawāl means disappearance or passing away, while niʿmah is the benefit bestowed upon another as an act of pure kindness and generosity.
• taḥawwul ʿāfiyatik (the loss—lit. the change—of Your well-being): its change, meaning that the well-being does not shift to its opposite, namely illness.
• fujāʾat niqmatik (the suddenness of Your punishment): pronounced with fatḥah on the fāʾ and a still jīm, in its shortened form; some read it with ḍammah on the fāʾ and fatḥah on the jīm with a lengthened vowel, fu-jāʾah. It refers to being seized all of a sudden without any forewarning.
