3 – Al-Tirmidhi (3546) and Ibn Ḥibbān (3/189) record, on the authority of al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned yet he does not invoke blessings upon me.”
This is sheer miserliness with something that costs nothing and entails no hardship, even though its reward is immense.
4 – Al-Tirmidhi (3545) and Ibn Ḥibbān (3/189) likewise transmit, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “May a man’s nose be rubbed in dust— I am mentioned before him yet he does not invoke blessings upon me.”
In other words, may such a person’s nose cling to the dirt; how abject and humiliated is the man—or woman—in whose hearing I am mentioned but who fails to honor and esteem me with blessings and peace, instead turning away in disregard.
5 – Muslim (384) relates, through Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever invokes one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him in return.”
This ḥadith proclaims the great virtue and lofty distinction of the one who sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even once: Allah rewards him in kind, yet greater and better, by sending ten blessings upon him.
6 – Al-Nasāʾī (1282) and Ibn Ḥibbān (3/195) narrate, from Ibn Masʿūd, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah has angels who travel about conveying to me the greetings of peace from my community.” This shows that the salutations of his ummah reach him from those far away just as they do from those who are near.
7 – Al-Ṭabarānī reports, from ʿAlī, that the Prophet said: “Every supplication is withheld until blessings are invoked upon Muḥammad.” This narration appears both as marfūʿ (traced back to the Prophet) and mawqūf (a Companion’s statement), yet the mawqūf version carries the ruling of being marfūʿ, for such a matter is not subject to personal opinion.
Benefits attained by invoking blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Ibn al-Qayyim states in his book Jalāʾ al-Afhām fī al-Ṣalāti wa-l-Salām ʿalā Khayr al-Anām that sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) yields several benefits:
First: Obedience to Allah’s command, in His words, “O you who believe, invoke blessings upon him…”
