20 – The reward and bounty promised for it have not been promised for any other deed, as the innumerable hadiths on the superiority of tasbīḥ (saying Subḥān Allāh), taḥmīd (saying al-ḥamdu lillāh), tahlīl (saying lā ilāha illā Allāh), and the like all attest.
21 – Constant remembrance of the Lord guarantees protection from forgetting Him, and such forgetfulness is the very ruin of a servant in this world and the next. The Almighty says, “And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He caused them to forget themselves; it is they who are defiantly disobedient” (Q 59:19). If remembrance and its continuance yielded no benefit except this, it would be sufficient.
In al-Kalima al-Ṭayyib I heard Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, say: “There is in this world a Garden; whoever does not enter it will never enter the Garden of the Hereafter.” He meant the remembrance of Allah, the heart’s being filled with love for Him, and the joy and delight that flow from that.
Thus remembrance brings an immediate recompense, a present-moment Paradise, and a life of contentment that no royal existence can approach. By contrast, forgetfulness and turning away from it breed worries, sorrows, grief, constriction, prompt punishments, a worldly fire and a present Hell. May Allah protect us from it.
22 – Dhikr is an easy act that a servant can perform while lying on his bed, walking through the marketplace, in health or sickness, in comfort and pleasure, during work, while standing, sitting, reclining, travelling or staying at home. No other deed pervades every time and circumstance as it does; indeed, a person may engage in it lightly while resting on his mattress and outstrip one who is standing (in worship) yet heedless. That is a favor from Allah which He bestows on whomever He wills.
23 – The assemblies of remembrance are the assemblies of the angels; they have no other gathering in this world but these. About them is the hadith of Abū Hurayrah in al-Bukhārī 6408 and Muslim 2689: “They are a company such that their companion will never be wretched.” By contrast, gatherings of heedlessness are gatherings of devils, each group being associated with its own kind and counterparts.
24 – Allah, Exalted is He, boasts of those who remember Him to His angels, as is reported in the hadith of Abū Saʿīd
