– It causes Allah to remember His servant, as the Almighty says: “So remember Me, and I will remember you” (Q 2:152). Were this the only fruit of remembrance, it would be enough in honor and distinction.
– It erases sins, for it ranks among the greatest good deeds, and good deeds wipe away evil deeds.
– It removes the sense of estrangement that lies between the servant and his Lord; nothing lifts that estrangement except remembrance.
– It is a safeguard from Allah’s punishment; through it tranquillity descends, mercy envelops, and the angels surround those engaged in remembrance.
– It occupies the tongue, keeping it from backbiting, tale-bearing, lying, obscenity, falsehood, and every other sin of speech. Whoever accustoms his tongue to the remembrance of Allah protects it from vanity and futility, but when a tongue grows dry of remembrance it becomes moist with every idle, false, and obscene utterance. There is no might nor power except with Allah. In the ḥadith of Umm Ḥabībah, she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Every word the child of Adam speaks is held against him—except commanding what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and the remembrance of Allah.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (2412) and Ibn Mājah (3974); al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a singular (gharīb) ḥadith.”]
– It is the easiest form of worship, yet among the loftiest, most virtuous, and most honored in Allah’s sight. The tongue’s motion is the lightest motion of all the limbs; if any other limb were to move throughout the day and night as much as the tongue does, it would suffer unbearable hardship—indeed, it could not manage it at all.
– It is the planting of Paradise. In the ḥadith of Ibn Masʿūd, traced back to the Prophet ﷺ: “Paradise has good soil and sweet water; it is a plain expanse, and its seedlings are: Subḥān Allāh, al-ḥamdu lillāh, lā ilāha illā Allāh, and Allāhu akbar.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3462); he said, “A ḥasan gharīb ḥadith.”] Al-Tirmidhī also records (3464) from Jābir, traced to the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever says, Subḥān Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih, a date-palm is planted for him in Paradise,” and he said, “A ṣaḥīḥ ḥadith.”
