Even though people differ in degrees of beauty, plainness, and all that lies between, the human being has nevertheless been fashioned in the finest manner and composed in the most perfect way; he should therefore thank Allah the Exalted for this blessing.
He must also beseech the One who perfected, adorned, and completed his outward form to perfect his inner form as well, granting him a noble and gracious character that completes his humanity and enhances his appearance—so that he is pleasing both in what is seen and in what is hidden, generous inside and out, handsome in form and in conduct.
The foremost inner attribute is iman (faith), for every virtuous trait follows its lead; it is their head and their inward foundation. Revelation differentiates between the outward and the inward so that both private and public perfection—and both external and internal beauty—may be attained.
When a Muslim performs wuduʾ (ritual ablution) and purifies his exterior, it is prescribed for him to ask Allah to purify his interior from turning toward anything other than Him. When he leaves the lavatory relieved of burdensome waste, he seeks Allah’s forgiveness so that the stains of sin may be lifted from him just as he has been freed from physical impurities.
Thus Allah Most High wants us to perfect ourselves and purify our souls. All praise and favor belong to Allah; His are gratitude and gracious bounty.
