Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

105 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I do not permit the mosque for a menstruating woman nor for anyone in a state of janābah.” Recorded by Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Khuzaymah declared it authentic (1).

Grade of the ḥadith
The report is ḥasan (sound). In its chain appears Aflaṭ ibn Khalīfah, whose reliability is unknown, yet Ibn Khuzaymah judged the ḥadith ṣaḥīḥ, Ibn al-Qaṭṭān graded it ḥasan, and al-Zaylaʿī likewise ruled it ḥasan in Naṣb al-Rāyah. Abū Dāwūd remained silent about it, which for him indicates acceptability. Ibn Sayyid al-Nās remarked that ḥasan is the lowest grade applicable here, for the transmitters are trustworthy and supporting reports exist elsewhere.

Vocabulary
– “I do not permit the mosque”: from ḥalāl, the opposite of ḥarām; the Prophet meant that he does not give leave to a menstruating woman or a person in janābah to stay in the mosque.
– ḥāʾiḍ (“menstruating woman”): its plural is ḥuyyāḍ. The word needs no feminine tāʾ because menstruation is exclusive to women; by contrast, a shared adjective such as “standing” takes the tāʾ in the feminine (qāʾimah).
– junub (with two ḍammahs): anyone in a state of major ritual impurity; the term covers male and female, singular, dual and plural, as in the verse, “And if you are in a state of janābah, then purify yourselves” (Q 5:6).

Points derived from the ḥadith
1 – It is prohibited for a menstruating woman—likewise a woman in post-partum bleeding—to remain inside the mosque, whether such is feared from her—
