does not attain that rank. Allah, exalted is He, says, “But whoever pardons and makes reconciliation—his reward rests with Allah” (al-Shūrā 42:40); He also says, “Indeed, whoever is patient and forgives—surely that is of the matters requiring firm resolve” (al-Shūrā 42:43); and He says, “Yet if you are patient, that is certainly better for those who are patient” (an-Naḥl 16:126).
Third: “No one humbles himself for Allah’s sake except that Allah raises him.” Whoever shows humility before Allah—by submitting to the truth and to its people, standing broken-hearted before his Lord, dealing gently with others, and displaying modesty—is granted nothing but further elevation in this world, love in people’s hearts, and a lofty station in Paradise. Abu Nuʿaym relates in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ, on the authority of Muʿādh, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah loves His devout, obscure, and innocent servants” (reported by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsat 7/145). Tirmidhī (3854) likewise reports, on the authority of Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Many a disheveled, dusty man clad in two worn garments—whom people pay no heed—if he were to swear by Allah, Allah would certainly fulfill it.”
