Al-Bukhari records under 2262, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has never sent a prophet without first making him tend sheep.” His Companions asked, “And you?” He replied, “Yes. I used to herd them for a few qirāṭs on behalf of the people of Mecca.”
He ﷺ also said, “Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah will raise him,” a report collected by Muslim (2588). And al-Bukhari narrates (5178), again through Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Were I invited to a meal of nothing more than a sheep’s hoof, I would accept; and were I given only a foreleg as a gift, I would take it.”
4 – The ḥadīth, then, warns emphatically against wronging people, boasting, and acting arrogantly toward them. Numerous texts convey the same warning. Allah says, “Indeed, Allah does not love every self-conceited boaster” (31:18). He also says, “And do not walk upon the earth exultantly” (17:37), and, “That is the Home of the Hereafter which We assign to those who seek neither exaltation on earth nor corruption” (28:83).
Ibn Masʿūd relates that the Prophet ﷺ said, “No one whose heart contains even an atom’s weight of pride will enter Paradise” (Muslim 91). There are many other ḥadīths on this subject.
