but only to expose their faults and disgrace them.

As for the laʿʿān (inveterate curser), he is someone who curses and reviles incessantly—sometimes with cause and often without any. Cursing and abuse are inherently vile dispositions: he was molded upon them, they have taken root and grown within him, and his neglect of disciplining and purifying his soul has only allowed them to increase.

In sum, these traits are not the traits of those whose hearts have been illumined by faith in Allah, whose bearing has been adorned by piety, whose conduct worship has set aright, and whose tongues remembrance has refined. Rather, they are the manners of the lowliest rabble among the flagrantly sinful and the hypocrites.
