Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

Vocabulary of the ḥadith:

  • al-fāḥish (the indecent person): fahsh denotes an abhorrent ugliness, whether in word or deed; hence a fāḥish is someone who commits such indecency with his speech or his actions.
  • al-badhīʾ (the foul-mouthed): the term badhīʾ follows the morphological pattern faʿīl. Arab philologists say, “badaʾa al-rajulu yabdaʾu badhāʾan wa badhāʾatan,” meaning, “the man spoke obscenely.” Thus he is badhīʾ and she is badhīʾah, while badhāʾ refers to repulsive speech.
  • al-ṭaʿʿān (the habitual reviler): one says, “ṭaʿana fīhi ṭaʿnan,” meaning, “he fault-found and disparaged him.” Ṭaʿn therefore means reviling, and the intensive form ṭaʿʿān describes a person who frequently abuses others.
  • al-laʿʿān (the inveterate curser): it is said, “laʿanahu yalʿanuhu laʿnan,” meaning, “he expelled him and drove him far from good.” Hence laʿʿān—the intensive form derived from laʿn—signifies someone who often calls down curses upon people. Al-Taʿrīfāt explains that laʿn when ascribed to Allah means driving the servant away in His wrath, whereas from a human it is a supplication that the person be subjected to Allah’s displeasure.

Lessons derived from the ḥadith:

  1. The narration contains a forceful prohibition of these vile traits. They do not belong to the character of the complete believer whose faith restrains him from offensive acts, obscene speech, and repulsive words. Rather, they mark those of weak faith and ill manners—people who have never tasted the sweetness of faith, and whose hearts have never been suffused with its joy.
  2. Allah detests the one who is indecent in his speech—anyone whose tongue utters obscene words of insult, abuse, cursing, slander, lying, or any other forbidden and offensive expression.
  3. The badhīʾ (foul-mouthed individual) is a person whose discourse is wicked and whose words are ugly. He harms others through his vulgarity and coarse language: he addresses people only with repulsive phrases, calls them by detestable nicknames, and meets them with harsh speech. Such a person is loathed by Allah, and equally despised by the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth.
  4. As for the ṭaʿʿān (habitual fault-finder), he is one who stabs at people’s honour and lineage, mocks their words and deeds, and directs at them biting criticism that is not meant for constructive guidance,
