1311 – Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah detests the indecent, foul-mouthed person.” Al-Tirmidhī recorded the ḥadith and declared it sound. (1)
Al-Tirmidhī likewise transmits—on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd, as a statement traced back to the Prophet—that “The believer is not a fault-finder, nor a curser, nor indecent, nor foul-mouthed.” He graded this narration ḥasan; al-Ḥākim deemed it ṣaḥīḥ, whereas al-Dāraquṭnī judged the mawqūf version stronger. Status of the ḥadith:
The report is authentic, yet scholars have differed over whether it is marfūʿ (attributed to the Prophet) or mawqūf (a Companion’s statement), with the latter view preferred.
The author notes: Al-Tirmidhī recorded it and classed it as ṣaḥīḥ. It is corroborated by the narration from Ibn Masʿūd, “A believer is not a fault-finder, nor a curser, nor indecent, nor foul-mouthed,” which al-Tirmidhī graded ḥasan and al-Ḥākim declared ṣaḥīḥ, though al-Dāraquṭnī considered the mawqūf wording more reliable.
Shaykh Shuʿayb al-Arnāʾūṭ, in his commentary on Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, writes: Al-Bukhārī included the report in al-Adab al-Mufrad with a sound chain; Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim also judged it ṣaḥīḥ, and al-Dhahabī concurred.
Al-ʿIrāqī said: Al-Tirmidhī transmitted it with a sound isnād from Ibn Masʿūd; it is likewise reported as mawqūf, and al-Dāraquṭnī maintained that the mawqūf version is the sounder one.
Even if deemed mawqūf, it still carries the weight of a marfūʿ report, for it conveys information about Allah Most High—something that cannot be asserted on the basis of personal opinion.
