1287 – Al-Miqdād ibn Maʿdikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The son of Adam fills no container more harmful than his stomach.” Collected by al-Tirmidhi, who classed it as ḥasan. (1)
Authenticity of the report
The ḥadith is sound (ḥasan). Ibn Kathīr, after citing it in his Tafsīr, wrote: “It was transmitted by al-Nasāʾī and al-Tirmidhi through several chains from Yaḥyā ibn Jābir. Al-Tirmidhi declared it ḥasan, and in another copy of his work: ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
The ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī also narrated it in his Musnad from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) …” and he mentioned the same wording. Al-Dāraqutnī recorded it in al-Afrād and remarked, “This is a singular report (gharīb) uniquely transmitted by Baqiyyah.”
The compiler adds: This ḥadith has corroborating evidence from the narration of Ibn Shuʿayb.
Al-Shawkānī, in his Tafsīr, said: “ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah, and al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān transmitted it through ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Eat, drink, and dress, but without arrogance or extravagance.’”
Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Dhahabī deemed the ḥadith authentic (ṣaḥīḥ). Ibn Ḥajar graded it ḥasan in Fatḥ al-Bārī, and al-Suyūṭī did likewise in al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr.
