is not, he grows resentful and irritable. Allah has branded the hypocrites with these very traits, saying: “Among them are those who find fault with you concerning the charities: if they are given a share of them they are pleased, but if they are not given a share, behold, they become enraged” (Q 9:58).
- Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Saʿdī, in his commentary on Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, writes:
• As for working solely for worldly ends and the pursuit of its gains: if a person’s entire intention is fixed on that goal, with no thought of seeking Allah’s Countenance or the Abode of the Hereafter, he will have no share in the Hereafter at all. Such a deed cannot proceed from a believer, for a believer—no matter how weak his faith—must at the very least yearn for Allah and the Hereafter.
• Whoever acts for both Allah’s sake and worldly benefit in equal measure is indeed a believer, yet his faith, monotheism, and sincerity are all imperfect, and his deed is likewise deficient because it lacks full devotion.
• But the one who works for Allah alone, dedicating his deed to Him with complete sincerity, while accepting a stipend that helps him carry out the deed and uphold the religion—such as a reward fixed for charitable works, a combatant who receives spoils or a salary for his struggle, or the endowments assigned to mosques, schools, and other religious offices—incurs no harm to his faith or his tawḥīd. He did not undertake the deed for worldly gain; rather, he aimed at serving the religion and intended that whatever he receives should assist him in fulfilling it.
