Points derived from the ḥadith
1 – The narration contains four discrete statements:
First: “Whoever seeks your protection by Allah, grant him protection.” In other words, whoever comes to you for refuge and clings to you when some grave affair has overwhelmed him, then shelter and support him, stand beside him in his hardship, and shield him from the one who has wronged or overstepped against him—so long as he is in the right in seeking safety. Once he has entered upon you in this manner, fulfil the Prophet’s instruction: “Support your brother, whether he is the wrongdoer or the one wronged.”
Second: “Whoever asks you by Allah, give to him.” Anyone who requests something from you and strengthens that request by invoking Allah—grant him what he seeks out of reverence for the One whose name he has invoked.
Third: “Whoever does you a kindness, repay him.” Repay his favor; do not let his benevolence remain an outstanding obligation upon you, for true gratitude to a benefactor is to recompense him and respond in kind. The one who initiates the good deed already possesses prior merit, so strive to reward him for his beneficence.
Fourth: If you cannot find anything with which to recompense the one who has done you a favor, then repay him with supplication. One of the finest prayers you can offer is to say, “jazāk Allāh khayran” (may Allah reward you with goodness).
2 – The ḥadith is evidence that seeking refuge with another created being for what he is able to provide is permissible, just as asking for help in times of need is permissible.
