100 – On the authority of Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever performs ablution on Friday, that is sufficient and commendable; but whoever takes a bath, then bathing is better.” It was narrated by the Five, and al-Tirmidhi graded it ḥasan. Status of the ḥadith
The ḥadith is authentic. Its soundness or weakness hinges on whether al-Hasan al-Baṣrī actually heard it from Samurah ibn Jundub, a point over which the scholars have differed:
• ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Ḥākim regard al-Hasan’s report from Samurah as connected and declare the ḥadith sound.
• Al-Bazzār and others maintain that al-Hasan did not hear from him directly; rather, he narrates from Samurah’s written collection.
• Ibn al-Mulqin stated, “It is authentic according to al-Bukhārī’s methodology,” for al-Bukhārī deems al-Hasan’s narrations from Samurah reliable across the board.
• Al-Albānī said, “Its transmitters are trustworthy, and the report has many corroborating chains.”
Vocabulary
• man: a conditional particle that renders two verbs jussive—the first is the condition, the second the response and consequence.
• tawaḍḍaʾa (performed ablution): the verb of the condition; its answer is bi-hā (“that suffices”), with the prefixed fāʾ linking answer to condition.
• fīhā (“in it”): meaning that by limiting himself to ablution, the person has still acted upon the Sunnah.
