1275 – Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you cook broth, add plenty of water to it and make sure to share it with your neighbors.” Reported by Muslim. (1)
Vocabulary of the ḥadith
• marqah: marq (broth) is the water in which meat is boiled until it becomes rich and fatty; a single serving of it is called marqah.
• taʿāhad jirānak: keep an eye on your neighbors, maintain ties with them, even if all you can send them is a little of that broth.
Lessons derived from the ḥadith
- The excellence of honoring, maintaining, and doing good to one’s neighbor has already been stressed. This ḥadith urges a person to look after his neighbors according to his means and never to belittle any act of kindness. Even if he possesses nothing but a pot of broth, he should increase its water and send some of it to them.
- Between neighbors the usual formalities have fallen away and the reserve found among strangers has disappeared. Even a small gift strengthens the bond, fortifies the relationship, and deepens affection. It is therefore best for neighbors to make use of whatever means will reinforce their neighborly ties, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Exchange gifts and you will love one another.”

* مفردات الحديث:
