Ibn al-Qayyim states in al-Hady: “It was the Prophet’s ﷺ regular practice to drink while seated; that was his habitual manner. A sound report likewise conveys that he forbade drinking while standing, yet another reliable narration affirms that he himself once drank standing.”
A group of scholars therefore held that there is no real contradiction: drinking while standing is allowed only when necessity calls for it.
Ibn al-Qayyim’s reconciliation is the preferable view, for the prohibition merely signifies dislike, and a genuine need removes that ruling of dislike. In addition, the spot beside the Zamzam well where he stood to drink is not suited to sitting. Allah knows best.
