1257 – ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do not initiate the Jews or the Christians with the greeting of salām. If you encounter them on a road, force them to its narrowest part.” Recorded by Muslim (1).
What is derived from the hadith:
- In Sunan al-Dāraqutnī (3/252) it is related from ʿĀʾidh al-Muzanī that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Islam is uppermost and nothing shall prevail over it.”
- The narration shows that when Jews or Christians become dhimmīs (non-Muslim subjects living under Islamic protection) in return for the jizyah (poll-tax) and share the lands of the Muslims, they are governed by special rulings detailed in the chapter on the regulations for ahl al-dhimmah (the People of the Covenant).
- Among those rulings: if a kitābī (Person of the Book) meets a Muslim on the road, the Muslim should direct him to the narrow side, leaving the center and wider part for himself. This signals Islam’s honor over them, and such restrictions may prompt them to embrace Islam, for nothing separates them from that honor but entering the faith, after which they will share the Muslims’ rights and obligations.
- These rulings are presently suspended because of the weakness of Islam and the Muslims’ dependence on unbelieving nations; yet we do not despair that Islam will regain its honor, dominance, and sovereignty, for Allah the Exalted says: “They want to extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah refuses except to perfect His light, even though the unbelievers detest it” (Qur’an 9:32).
- The hadith also forbids initiating Jews and Christians with the greeting of salām; however, if they begin
