others interpreted al-salāmu ʿalayk (“peace be upon you”) as a prayer meaning, “You are under Allah’s protection.” One may therefore say to him: “May Allah accompany you; may Allah be with you.” Still others held that it conveys the sense of salāmah (safety), i.e., “May safety ever attend you.”
