1210 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “On the Day of Resurrection the just judge will be brought forth, and the reckoning will be so severe that he will wish he had never judged between two people in all his life.” Narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān; al-Bayhaqī also recorded it with the wording, “even concerning a single date-fruit.” (1)
Authenticity status
The chain of transmission is sound (ḥasan).
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr: it was narrated by Aḥmad, al-ʿUqaylī, Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Bayhaqī.
Al-ʿUqaylī remarked: ʿImrān ibn Ḥaṭṭān, the narrator from ʿĀʾishah, has no corroborating transmitters and I cannot ascertain that he actually heard it from her.
Ibn Ḥajar replied in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb: That is not so, for in the hadith found in al-Bukhārī it is explicitly stated that he heard it from her.
Points derived from the hadith
1 – The report underscores the peril and immense responsibility of the judiciary, because its function is to decide people’s rights with respect to life, honour, and property. A judge is therefore obliged to exercise the utmost caution and rigorous investigation to arrive at what is true and correct.
2 – It also proves that judges will face a particularly exacting reckoning on the Day of Resurrection on account of the dangers inherent in their work. They must therefore take every precaution, pursue thorough inquiry, expend their utmost effort, seek Allah’s help, consult people of truth and fairness, and keep away from evil companions and unscrupulous clerks.
