• Attributes of knowledge and all-encompassing awareness compel them to keep watch over themselves in every movement and every stillness.
Whoever understands these lofty meanings and puts them into practice, it is hoped that he will be included in the Prophet’s statement: “Allah has ninety-nine names; whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise.” Enumerating them means to grasp them, comprehend them, acknowledge them, and worship Allah through them.
Benefits
First: The People of the Sunnah affirm everything that has come in the Quran and the Sunnah concerning the attributes of Allah Most High. They make no distinction between attributes of essence and attributes of action that are linked to His will. All of them pertain to Allah, and He is characterised by them—without distortion or negation, and without inquiring into how or likening them to creation. They simply affirm the reality of each attribute in a way befitting the Majesty of Allah, while consigning knowledge of its modality to Him. In this manner they are protected from both nullifying the divine attributes and likening Allah to His creation, two errors into which deviant groups have fallen through excess in denial or in affirmation.
Affirming Allah’s attributes in a way befitting His Majesty, while leaving the knowledge of how the attribute is to Allah, is a foundational principle adopted by the righteous predecessors in their understanding of the divine attributes. It spared them the need to reinterpret the scriptural texts on the attributes and safeguarded them from deriving from the Quran and Sunnah anything impossible regarding Allah, such as resemblance to His creation: “There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” (42:11).
Second: Distortion (taḥrīf) means altering the text, whether in wording or in meaning. Textual alteration changes the very wording and thus the meaning, while semantic alteration is to divert the wording from its apparent sense without evidence.
Negation (taʿṭīl) is the denial of all or some of Allah’s attributes.
Likening (tamthīl) is to ascribe to Him a counterpart, which would entail resemblance and equality.
