91 – ʿĪsā ibn Yazdād—or Yazdād—narrated from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When any one of you urinates, let him shake his penis three times.” Ibn Mājah recorded it with a weak chain of transmission (1).
-
Degree of the ḥadīth:
The report is weak. It was related by Ibn Mājah; Aḥmad (18574); Abū Dāwūd in al-Marāsīl; al-Bayhaqī (1/113); Abū Nuʿaym in al-Maʿrifah; and al-ʿUqaylī in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (3/381), all of them through the route of ʿĪsā ibn Yazdād from his father.
– Ibn Maʿīn said: “Neither ʿĪsā nor his father is known.”
– Abū Ḥātim said: “His report is mursal, and he was not a Companion.”
– Al-Nawawī stated in Sharḥ al-Muhadhdhab: “They are unanimously agreed that it is weak.”
– Ibn al-Qayyim said in Ighāthat al-Lahfān: “I consulted our shaykh—meaning Ibn Taymiyyah—about shaking and squeezing; he did not accept it and said, ‘The ḥadīth is not authentic.’” -
Lexical notes:
– “let him shake his penis” (fal-yantur dhakarahu): natr means to pull or jerk it firmly. Al-Qāmūs states: “istan-tara min bawlih” means he drew it out, extracting whatever urine remains in the penis during cleansing. -
Points derived from the ḥadīth:
- Natr of the penis refers to pulling it so that the remaining drops of urine are forcefully expelled.
- The ḥadīth indicates the recommendation of shaking three times after urination.
