Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam
  • Points derived from the ḥadith:
1 – The report shows that offering the ʿEid sacrifice is obligatory for anyone who enjoys both ability and means. This is the view of Abū Ḥanīfah. The other three imams, together with Abū Ḥanīfah’s two principal disciples, maintain that the sacrifice is a highly emphasised sunnah rather than a duty.
2 – The commentator on Bulūgh al-Marām observes that, because the proofs for obligation are weak, the majority of the Companions and their Followers regard it as an emphatically recommended practice. Ibn Ḥazm said: “Nothing sound is reported from any Companion declaring it obligatory.”

Al-Dāraqūṭnī ⦗2/21⦘ and al-Ḥākim ⦗1/441⦘ record from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Three matters are obligatory upon me yet voluntary for you: the sacrifice, the witr prayer, and the two rakʿahs of dawn.”
