1175 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever possesses ample means yet fails to offer a sacrifice, let him not approach our prayer-ground.” It was narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Mājah; al-Ḥākim declared it authentic, while the leading scholars besides him judged it to be mawqūf, i.e., a statement of Abu Hurayrah rather than a Prophetic report. - Status of the ḥadith:
The report is sound (ḥasan) when treated as mawqūf, for all its transmitters are reliable.
The compiler writes: “It was narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Mājah; al-Ḥākim authenticated it, whereas the imams other than al-Ḥākim held that it is mawqūf.”
Ibn Ḥajar states in Fatḥ al-Bārī: “Its narrators are trustworthy, yet there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is marfūʿ (attributed to the Prophet) or mawqūf (a Companion’s statement). The mawqūf version is closer to what is correct,” as affirmed by al-Ṭaḥāwī and others, even though those who transmitted it as marfūʿ are themselves trustworthy.
Within this topic there are supporting narrations, though none is entirely free from criticism:
– the ḥadith of Abu Saʿīd recorded by al-Ḥākim, whose chain contains ʿAṭiyyah;
– the ḥadith of ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn recorded by al-Ḥākim, whose chain includes Abu Ḥamzah al-Thumālī, who is very weak;
– the ḥadith of ʿAlī recorded by al-Ḥākim, whose chain contains ʿAmr ibn Khālid al-Wāsiṭī, who is discarded.
- Vocabulary of the ḥadith:
– saʿah: with two open vowels. One says wasiʿa – yasʿu – saʿah; it denotes affluence, wealth, or capability. The final hāʾ substitutes for an original wāw.
– muṣallānā: muṣallā means “the place of prayer.” Here it refers specifically to the ʿĪd prayer-ground.
