Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

• Amlahīn – al-amlah: an animal whose white colouring outweighs its black. Other explanations exist as well.
• Aqranayn – al-aqran: one that possesses two horns.
• Ṣifāḥuhumā – plural of ṣafḥah, the surface or side of a thing; here it means the ram’s neck.
• Thamīnayn / samīnayn – the word is reported with both thāʾ (th) and sīn (s). With thāʾ it means “valuable,” i.e. high-priced because of its quality; with sīn it is samīn, “fat,” the opposite of lean and emaciated.
• Yaṭaʾ fī sawād – “it walks in black,” meaning its legs are black.
• Yabrik fī sawād – “it kneels in black,” meaning its belly is black.
• Yanẓur fī sawād – “it looks in black,” i.e. the area around its eyes is black.
• Halummī – “bring (it) here.” Two dialects are found: the people of the Ḥijāz use one invariable form for singular, dual, plural and feminine, pronounced with a final fatḥah; Banū Tamīm inflect it for the dual, the plural and the feminine.
• Al-mudiyyah – with ḍammah on the mīm, sukūn on the dāl, a fatḥah on the yāʾ, and ending with a hāʾ; plural mudā or mudiyyāt. It is the wide knife called a shafrah (blade).
• Ashḥidhīhā – one says shḥaḏtu al-sayfa wa ’l-sikkīna (“I sharpened the sword or the knife”) when it is honed on a whetstone or the like.

What is derived from the ḥadīth
1 – The ḥadīth proves the legitimacy of the uḍḥiyah (ritual sacrifice). The Muslims have unanimously agreed on its lawfulness, based on His words: “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice” (108:2). Qatādah, ʿAṭāʾ, ʿIkrimah and others said that the verse refers to the ʿĪd prayer and the slaughter of the uḍḥiyah. Undoubtedly, the verse is general, covering every prayer and every act of slaughter, for the believer is commanded to devote both sincerely to Allah, exalted is He.
2 – It is recommended to choose a fine animal for the uḍḥiyah: well-fleshed and of the best colours—specifically from among sheep, of the variety mentioned in the ḥadīth, white or predominantly white, and horned, for this indicates strength. That is the preferable option.
