1172 – Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The ritual slaughter performed on the fetus is covered by (i.e., takes the ruling of) the slaughter performed on its mother.” Narrated by Aḥmad, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared it authentic (1).

Grading of the ḥadith:
The report is ṣaḥīḥ (sound). It was recorded by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, al-Dāraqutnī, and al-Bayhaqī through the chain of Mujālid ibn Saʿīd—from Abū’l-Waddāk—from Abū Saʿīd. It was also transmitted by Aḥmad, Ibn al-Jārūd, and Ibn Ḥibbān through the chain of Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq—from Abū’l-Waddāk—from Abū Saʿīd. Al-Tirmidhī said, “Ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.” Al-Mundhirī judged its chain to be ḥasan and noted additional routes for it from Abū Saʿīd, preserved by Aḥmad, al-Ṭabarānī, and al-Khaṭīb. Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd affirmed its soundness by citing it in Al-Ilmām bi-Aḥādīth al-Aḥkām. A corroborating narration from Jābir was collected by Abū Dāwūd, al-Dāramī, and al-Ḥākim; the latter said it is “sound according to Muslim’s conditions,” a judgment with which al-Dhahabī concurred, and the assessment is correct. Ibn al-Qaṭṭān, al-ʿIrāqī, and al-Ḥāfiẓ (Ibn Ḥajar) all ruled that, when its various chains are combined, the ḥadith constitutes decisive proof.
