All of the foregoing, besides offending sound taste, conflicts with the principles of health, for the dangers that threaten a person’s well-being and very life because of such leniency are not insignificant. Dogs contract a tapeworm that can be transmitted to human beings, causing a chronic disease that may even become life-threatening. It has been proven that every breed of dog, even the smallest, is liable to carry these tapeworms.
6 – Three situations are exempted from the prohibition of keeping a dog:
The first: a dog that guards livestock from predators such as wolves and protects them from thieves.
The second: a dog kept to guard farms, especially those on the outskirts and in rural districts where people fear for themselves, their livestock, their fruit, and their crops from thieves and wild beasts.
The third: a dog trained for hunting, the rulings for which will be detailed later, God willing.
Accordingly, owning or keeping dogs for any of these three purposes is permissible and excluded from the general prohibition.
7 – The scholars say that the wisdom behind forbidding a dog to remain in the house and be kept there is the fear it instils in people, the angels’ refusal to enter a dwelling that contains a dog, and the impurity and filth associated with it.
- Difference among the scholars:
The jurists disagreed as to whether keeping a dog without need is prohibited or merely disliked. Imams al-Shafiʿi and Ahmad maintained that it is prohibited, relying on the authentic narrations that speak of its severe impurity, the angels’ non-entry into a house that contains a dog, and the reduction of a person’s reward when he keeps a dog for no valid need.
