It is recommended to earn a living and to study the rulings that govern it. Allah the Exalted says, “He is the One who has made the earth manageable for you, so walk in its paths and eat of His provision” (al-Mulk 67:15).
Taking the lawful, legislated means is itself part of tawakkul (reliance on Allah). One must never imagine that sustenance proceeds from one’s own labor; it comes from Allah, by way of the means to which He has guided us.
For hunted game to be lawful, four conditions are required:
-
The hunter must be legally competent—that is, someone whose slaughtered animal would be permissible to eat.
-
The instrument employed is of two kinds:
a. A sharp tool or an arrow that penetrates the hide; or
b. A trained predator, such as a dog or a falcon. -
The hunter must deliberately release the instrument with the intention of hunting; if it departs on its own, the game is not lawful.
-
At the moment of release, the hunter must pronounce “In the name of Allah.” Any game taken without this invocation, when omitted knowingly and deliberately, remains forbidden.
